Cleaning for Passover
"...Let no yeast be found in your possession in all your land for seven days..." Deuteronomy 16:4
I've been cleaning for Passover for a week now. Yes, I know, Passover isn't for another 2 weeks, but I have a lot to do.
You see, when I first started cleaning for Passover 5 years ago, the only thing I did was get rid of my yeast and my bread - zip, done, finished. The next year, I learned that things like oxo cubes have yeast in them, and that baking soda too was a leavening. I looked a little closer at my pantry for yeast in the labels and got rid of those things.
The next year, I happened to move a piece of furniture during Passover, and found a huge mouse stash of bread and such - WOW - I suddenly realized it wasn't just leavening in my pantry - those things easily visible that needed to be cleaned out. I had to actually LOOK for the leaven, seek it out and clean it away.
The following year, armed with this knowledge to LOOK, I opened up my oven door - I mean, unscrewed the two parts of the door to clean the glass - and found- CRUMBS!
So this year I've started 3 weeks early. And not only do I need to work in my home, but I also performed a Mitzvot - a good deed - and went to a friends house, with my kids, and we spent a whole day working to help her clean for Passover too. She's a working mom, so she doesn't have the time to completely get into the corners and all the cupboards in her kitchen, so we went to help her on a day off. It was so good to work together as two women - sharing and laughing... while my kids tackled her basement and her kids rooms.
So, why clean for Passover? Every year when you clean, and you find more and more leavening.. this teaches you, reminds you.. to continue searching and seeking for sin in your life. It reminds you to sweep out those corners of your life where sin is hiding. Cleaning my house is a physical discipline in the physical world, which teaches me a spiritual truth. OH, how blessed I am to be cleaning, for I know how blessed I am every time I can seek and find and illuminate a sin in my life.
Be blessed my friends

We are celebrating Passover for the first time this year, too, and it is so much fun! We are only doing one leaven-free day, today, because we have had so much company until yesterday, staying with us. But anyway, we had a great time reading the labels and clearing stuff out, sweeping crumbs up, etc. We did a lot of reading about Passover, from the OT and the NT, and we read about "leaven" too, in the NT, comparing it to sin, and how much we need JESUS!!! It was great. Thanks for sharing this. :)

When I speak about parenting there is a great deal of emotion tied to the topic of discipline. There is also a great deal of confusion on the part of many parents as they ask, "How should I discipline my child?" |
