Cloth Diaper COVER reviews
This is far from exhaustive of all the covers that are out there, but these are the ones I have used, and what I have thought of them.
If you read my reviews of cloth diapers, you will know that I do NOT like diapers with Velcro on them; I much prefer snaps for durability, longevity and easy of washing.
I am a little bit more friendly with Velcro on the covers, with one major stipulation: they MUST have fold-back laundry tabs so they don’t get caught on everything in the wash.
Velcro *is* a little easier and faster during a diaper change, but I have found that velcro covers still do not hold up as well in the long run as covers with snaps.
That said, here we go:
Bummis Original Wrap and Bummis Super Whisper Wrap – Unfortunately, I have not had very good luck with these covers. I know people that have just loved them, but I have not found them to hold up very well at all. They seem to start leaking way too soon, and I have tried buying them more than once! I use the same washing system as I do with my others, so I’m not sure why they have not held up well for me.
Thirsties- Right now these are my favorite cover with aplix (similar to Velcro). The medium size is very versatile, and fit my baby from about 12 lbs to over 25 lbs! The laundry fold-back tabs have never come undone in the wash, so they don’t get stuff stuck in them. They have leg gussets to prevent messes, and I have actually NEVER had poop escape one of these covers, not even runny breastfed baby poop. Never. At about $11 a cover, they are a bit pricier, but since they fit baby for such a long time, I find them to be worth the money.
MotherEase Air Flow Cover and MotherEase Rikki Wrap – The AirFlow cover has snaps, and the rikki wrap has Velcro. I have had both, but the Velcro wrap I have never been able to make last through more than one child. On the other hand, the Air Flow cover with snaps seems to last forever! I have been able to use these covers through three children so far and they are still going strong! Covers don’t fit as trim as wraps, so I prefer wraps if you are using a flatfold or prefold diaper that you plan to just lay in the wrap, so that it is snug around baby. However, if you are using a fitted diaper, which is my favorite, the covers are fine. These do not let poop escape either!
Gerber Diaper Covers – Well, what can I say? You get what you pay for! J These are cheap covers, which is nice for the budget, but they don’t last well, and I did not find them to fit my chubby babies well either.
Prowraps- These are affordable Velcro covers. They fit very well and fit baby for a long time as well. I like them because they have leg gussets and nothing escapes them. The price is right, and they seem to hold up well as well. The only drawback to these is that they do not have fold-back laundry tabs.
Basic Connections Pull-On Covers – It doesn’t get much cheaper than this, at $3 per cover! And at http://www.nickisdiapers.com/ you can get free shipping on all covers too. These do not have the ability to remain waterproof under a LOT of stress – that is, if your diaper is totally drenched, these covers will probably leak. I try to change my baby before the diaper gets to that point, though, so they work fine. J However, they wouldn’t be the best choice for nighttime use, or a long car ride, for example. They are best used with a fitted diaper, or a prefold secured with a snappi.
Wool Soakers – If you buy these, they are super-pricey. I have never bought them. However, if you have even the most basic sewing skills, you can make them out of wool sweaters which you can purchase for peanuts at the thrift shop and felt. (More on making diaper covers with wool later.) I just love using wool, as it is an all-natural fiber and completely breathable, while still being waterproof. I feel it has to be the best-for-your-baby choice!
