How To Create A Steam Canopy to Treat the Common Cold and Clear Up Stuffy Noses
I hate having a stuffy nose, and it is clear that my babies hate it too! I did not find this solution until I had my third child, and I wish I had known about it much sooner. Stuffy noses are even worse in small babies, because when they can't breathe through their noses, they can't suckle! It is just so frustrating, eh? You have probably heard of taking them into a hot shower and sitting in the steam, right? That is a good idea, but how long can you really sit in the steam with your baby? At the most, only until the hot water runs out! Here is a much better solution: create a steam canopy! All you need is a humidifier and a blanket.
About the humidifier: I use a Vicks humidifier that I got at Wal-Mart for about $10. I prefer hot steam to cool mist - just use common sense to prevent burns. I like this humidifier because it is cheap and because it has a little "well" that I can put essential oils in. I learned a little trick to make the steam *really* flow: add about a tsp or a tbsp of regular table salt to the water! It's amazing how much difference it makes! Before plugging in your humidifier, you can also add some essential oils if you choose. I like to add about 3-5 drops of eucalyptis oil in the little "well" of the humidifier. I have heard that citris oils are also good, but I'm so happy with eucalyptis oils, that I have never tried the citris oils.
Now you get creative and design a tent! I do this with the pack n' play. Just get a blanket or comforter of some sort and put it over the crib, bed, or pack n' play. Babies usually sleep more when they aren't feeling well, so this is usually a good place to do it. If this is not the case for your baby, you could improvise and set up your tent elsewhere, at a place where you could sit in the tent holding your baby. Be aware that the blanket will get soaking wet, so you may want to wash it or at least dry it after using. If you need a canopy for an extended period of time, you may need two blankets so you can switch them. I like to use a comforter so that it really holds the steam in.
That's it! Just as good as a shower, but it will keep on going all day and night!
