Fulltime Mama
My name is Elizabeth, and I am the happy wife of ten years to Fabio and fulltime mama to four beautiful children: Joshua-9, Dominique 7, Israel- almost 5, Johann-3 and expecting a new baby in April 2012! We are currently living in Brazil as missionaries and life never ceases to be an adventure!!!
I love motherhood with a passion and am passionate about providing a place here at MamaKnowsBest where mothers can learn, grow, and share ... pooling the wisdom of many into one big jackpot for mothers.

This is one good read that I found so helpful and that I would highly recommend to any parent. It goes to great lengths to explain the development of the brain, and what a developing brain needs in order to function properly. It describes the problems arising in this generation of children in regard to their general lack of attention span, deficient language skills, difficulty with reading comprehension and inability to solve problems, among other things. Many issues are addressed, including nutrition, ADHD, quality of childcare, the paramount importance of parental involvement, interaction, quality conversation and loving care, and in particular the detrimental effect of TV and video games. She explains how many children are now being deprived of "normal" activities that are so important to their development - things like setting the table, washing the dishes, playing in the garden and chasing butterflies! More and more these hands-on, practical life skills type of activities are being replaced by tv, movies and video games. It was encouraging to me as I read this to see how easy it can be to provide all of the necessary stimulation our children need for proper brain development and academic success - just include them in your daily life - sorting laundry, counting place settings, putting the dishes away, planting a garden.
I found it interesting after reading this book to talk to several veteran teachers. I asked them, in their many years of teaching, if they have seen a decrease in attention span, in general, and ability to absorb information easily and other thinking skills. Their reply was a unanimous YES! They exactly confirmed what this book talks about by their own personal experiences. Get it; read it! (My local library had it.)
