There I was, standing in the grocery store isle, staring at the instant oatmeal packets for $2.00 for a box of 10 packets. Weighing the convenience against the price. $2.00 isn't that much money... and they are convenient. But then again, I can get a whole container of quick oats for about $1.50. The sensible side of me won over and I bought the tub of oats. Not that oatmeal is that hard to make in the first place, but every little minute counts to us moms. So I decided to make my own oatmeal packets. It was very inexpensive, simple and can be whipped up while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee!
You will need:
Container of quick oats - package of brown sugar - 1/2 c & 1/4 c dry measuring cups - 1 Tbls & 1 tsp measuring spoons - stapler - paper 'lunch bags' - scissors - cup of coffee (optional)
First take the bag and cut about 2/3 of the top off.
Take the upper part of the bag and fold up about 1/4". Do this twice.
Staple three times along the edge.
 Add 1/4 c quick oats.....
.....and brown sugar. (I used 1 tsp.)
Repeat the same folding & stapling process to seal the packet.
 Voila!! Doesn't that feel good?
Open the bottom part of the bag up. Put 1/2 cup of quick oats in.
Put in brown sugar. I used 1 Tbls. (The good thing about making your own is that you control how much sugar goes in!)
Now you are ready to make your packet!
Fold over twice and staple, as you did on the little packets.
And look what a little innovation & creativity can accomplish! I believe I made about 27 packets from the container of oatmeal.
To serve, rip open the package, pour contents into bowl, (I just eyeball the water), I think about 1/2 - 2/3 cup, microwave for 30-60 seconds. Stir & serve! I made two different sizes for my little children. But you could add more or less as your needs may be. You can also cut and fill several bags and then do the folding & stapling all at once. Since the paper bags are not waterproof it's best to store your packets in ziplock bags. This was my first try at this, and I just did a simple version. But I don't see any reason why you couldn't snazz it up a bit. Some variation ideas are adding cinnamon or vanilla powder, powdered creamer, raisins or other dried fruit. (With dried fruit you may need to add the water to the bowl & let it sit for a few minutes to soften the fruit before microwaving, possibly.)
I hope this is helpful to someone! |

Great idea! We'll be trying this at our house! Wonder if I could add dehydrated fruit?

Thank you!! I have been buying those packets and hating what is in them and the cost...but never thinking I could make my own. Next time I go shopping, I am getting what I need to make these!! I can't believe I am excited about oatmeal :D
