With my third child, I made the switch to cloth diapers. (You can read about my experiences and what I learned here.) My husband is a plumber, and he made this diaper sprayer for me, which was my saving grace once my son got older and I had to deal with toddler messes! No dunking necessary! So, if your husband (or a friend) is a handyman, you could show them this little tutorial my husband put together – or try it yourself! DIAPER SPRAYER STEP #1: Most toilets have a standard fill valve on the tank with a threaded connection. Usually there is a shut off valve or a fitting with a 3/8" compression thread. The first step is to make sure the water is turned off, either at the valve below the tank or the whole building at the main shut off, whichever is easier. Then after the water is off, remove the supply tube. Some are rigid tubing and some are flexible. DIAPER SPRAYER STEP #2: Now screw onto the 3/8" compression thread a tee that will provide two 3/8" compression threads. Note that the tee in the picture has a nut screwed onto the left side, as this will not be needed. DIAPER SPRAYER STEP #3: Next, connect a new braided stainless steel toilet supply tube of the shortest length possible between top thread of tee and the toilet fill valve. DIAPER SPRAYER STEP #4: The next part needed is a ball valve (the bigger the handle, the easier it will be to operate) with a 3/8" female union on one side and a 3/8" male thread on the other side (all compression thread). DIAPER SPRAYER STEP #5: Now attach the male side of the valve to one end of a 3/8 by 3/8 dishwasher supply hose, again stainless steel braided. DIAPER SPRAYER STEP #6: On the female side of the valve attach a 3/8" compression by 1/4" compression union. To the 1/4" side of the union, attach a small piece of 1/4" outside diameter tubing (aka refrigerator water line). This works nicely to achieve a sharp stream for some of those poopy diapers that may have been sitting a few minutes. DIAPER SPRAYER STEP #7: Finally connect the whole assembly with the dishwasher supply hose to the open thread on the tee. DIAPER SPRAYER STEP #8: Hang wherever it is convenient and away from the mischievous ones. Close up of the sprayer, and the shut off valve. It is easy to operate with one hand while your other hand holds the poopy diaper. :) |
