I have been rather disappointed lately with my dishwasher, or maybe just with my detergent. I used to get melaleuca's brand detergent, but the price went up quite a bit and my sil stopped ordering it, so it was too much of a hassle to get. Then, I tried Aldi brand detergent, both in powder and gel form, as well as a few other brands, but I didn't like any of them! It seemed like my glasses did not come out looking clean - and in fact, a lot of times it seemed like they looked worse than when they went into the dishwasher! They sort of had a film on them, which was embarrassing when company came over. They just didn't look clean. And my silverware was dull as well. I resorted to washing them by hand....
Then, after reading my mom's articles on the many and varied uses of baking soda and vinegar, I decided to try a little experiment. I simply put baking soda in the pre-wash side of the detergent well, and white vinegar on the main-wash side, and ran a regular cycle. I have been doing this for a couple of weeks now, and my dishes are back to looking *clean* when they come out!!!
I just had to pass this along. What could be cheaper and easier than that??

Is it the "pre wash" that is not sealed? My pre-wash compartment also has holes in the cover, so all the contents fall out as soon as I close the door of the dishwasher...
Maybe try putting the baking soda in the open one and the vinegar in the closed one? Let us know how it goes if you try it!
