My name is Elizabeth, and I am the happy wife of ten years to Fabio and fulltime mama to four beautiful children: Joshua-9, Dominique 7, Israel- almost 5, Johann-3 and expecting a new baby in April 2012! We are currently living in Brazil as missionaries and life never ceases to be an adventure!!!
I love motherhood with a passion and am passionate about providing a place here at MamaKnowsBest where mothers can learn, grow, and share ... pooling the wisdom of many into one big jackpot for mothers.

If I felt I had to go somewhere by myself every time I needed to nurse my baby, I think I would find breastfeeding very stressful. Many times, there isn't a good place to go - like in a restaurant, for example. So, I figured out early on with my first baby how to modestly nurse, even in areas where there are people around. The way I did it was to nurse in front of a mirror at home! That way I could see exactly what people in front of me might be seeing. :)
Note: I do still use a blanket most of the time, and in certain situations I do still feel more comfortable leaving the area, just to not make anyone else present feel uncomfortable.
So, try nursing in front of a mirror at home so you can figure out how to breastfeed your baby without flashing anyone!
UPDATED TO ADD: Today I received an email from a reader asking for tips on covering the back and side while nursing, so I thought I would include here what I told her:
About the stomach and back thing, the best thing in my life for nursing is the nursing tanks they sell at Target. They have black, white and grey, and it seems even more colors online. Here you can see a picture of what the tanks look like. They are like a nursing bra almost, except that they go down past your waist. So, with a shirt over it, you lift your outer shirt, while the tank is still fully in place, open the flap, and you are covered everywhere except the breast!
Before I had those, I dressed in layers a lot, with a tank or tighter-fitting top under a button-down or zip-down shirt or sweater over it. Then when I opened the outer top, it would cover my back and side while I lifted the inner top. Make sense?

They fold up pretty easily. They are only as thick as a sheet like you would put on a bed, so they don't take up too much room at all.

Thanks for adding that tip. :) Do those fold up nicely for carrying in a diaper bag?

I totally agree that it so much easier to nurse in public with those nursing tanks from Target. I wear them every day. I also find it so much easier with my nursing cover up I bought from Target. You can find it at Target as well. http://www.target.com/Cover-Style-Nursing-Umbrellas/dp/B0015B1HC8/sr=1-4/qid=1235182167/ref=sr_1_4/191-8943810-0446322?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Abreastfeeding%20cover&page=1
I didn't have one with my first child and it is SO much easier this time around. I find myself nursing absolutely everywhere now!

If you’ve read, Praying Through Your Pregnancy, you found that I wasn’t always a believer. When I became pregnant, I began to seek God like never before. And out of fear and desperation I began to pray. Even though my husband was supporting me along the way, I was scared and felt all alone. |
