How To Wash and (Re)lanolize Your Wool Diaper Covers
I start with making my own wool wash. You can buy wool wash but this is simple - and much cheaper. You can buy Lanolin online; I think that I got mine at a health food store. I've been told that you can use Lansinoh, which is designed for breastfeeding, but I have not tried this personally. To make homemade wool wash: -Heat about a cup of water and put in a mug. -Drop a pea sized amount of lanolin into hot water, I do a little more if I have several covers. -Add a drop or two of baby wash or baby shampoo. Use something natural. -Add a couple drops of essential oil if desired I like Lavender or Eucalyptus. (This will help keep moths away as well as smell good) -Stir briskly until lanolin is melted. Washing: -Turn cover/longies inside out and rinse in cool water; gently squeeze out excess water. This will remove any urine residue. -Fill sink with warm/tepid water. -Put in your lanolin mix, swish with hand then place covers/longies into the water. -Let soak (without agitating) for about 15min. -Drain water from sink and gently squeeze some water from covers, being sure to support the cover and don't let it dangle. -Refill sink with cool water; place covers in it ( to remove any soap residue) and drain again. Again gently squeeze. -Carefully place covers on a towel; roll up and press to remove more water. -Lay out on screen or dry towel to dry. Wool only needs to be washed about every couple of weeks. *If you are felting down wool sweaters to make your own covers (more on that later) use hot water in washing machine with 1 tsp. lanolin and 1Tbs. baby wash. |
