Denise Marotta Lopes
Denise Marotta Lopes is a daughter of the King, a woman who is loved by her heavenly Father. It is her joy to be a wife, and mother of two grown children, and to serve those whom God brings into her life. It is her heart's desire to see people so consumed by the love of God that they pour out onto others, and are set free to walk out their destinies. She has written a book titled "Who's Sitting on Your Nest? The Virtues of Stay-at-Home Motherhood". It focuses on the joys of stay-at-home motherhood, and the benefits of a life invested in this ministry. The book was written to affirm those who have chosen to mother full-time and to encourage those who may be considering the call to do so. It takes the reader through the decison-making process, the value of motherhood, and the practical aspects of carrying out the mission. Denise is an avid lover of Jesus, dedicated intercessor, author, teacher, and speaker.
INVITING OTHERS INTO OUR FAMILY TRADITIONS
by Denise Marotta Lopes

The children and I were at a homeschooling event when another mother said something that stopped me in my tracks.  In fact, it marked me, and gave me a completely new perspectiveShe said that we focus too much on our families to the exclusion of inviting others in.  She went on to mention particular ministries that encouraged this inward view.  I stood convicted.

I grew up in a very close family.  Mealtimes and vacations were spent together.  Even after I was married, my husband and I still attended events and holidays with the family.  When our children were born we learned to balance our loyalty to the family with our desire to start our own traditions.  We were just starting to get comfortable with the transition when this dear sister suggested that families were being taught to be too inwardly-focused.

This revelation started a new growing process in my life.  Having company was never an issue for us.  We loved having friends in to share a meal and fellowship.  But I saw that certain times were set aside exclusively for family occasions.  I began to seek God about this and have learned that inviting others in doesn't diminish the strength of the family.  Rather, it enhances and flavors it.  Many years ago, we began a new tradition of having our friends share Thanksgiving with us.  It became my favorite holiday.  Since moving to our Maryland home over three years ago, we have had opportunities to meet the most delightful people.  Several joined us for dinner this Thanksgiving, along with my out-of-state family.  This year we will have a dear friend come for Christmas Day.  Perhaps there will be others.

I am thankful to the woman that opened my eyes that morning many years ago.  I am full of joy in opening my door to all of my family.  I encourage you to look about you and become extended.  Consider new traditions that are inclusive.  Others will be blessed to be a part of your family, and your heart will be filled in the sharing of these moments.
