I am a homeschool mom with six children.
I had never really thought about looking at my own attitude when I was getting discouraged by my children's attitude. To my surprise, I found that my own attitude was a bit sour towards my work. This, in turn, was affecting my children's attitudes towards their own work/chores. It was a book that I read that opened my eyes to this.

I was reading a gem of a book, The Pursuit of Godly Seed by Denny Kenaston (www.homefirepub.com), when I came to the section of text that asked me what my attitude was toward housework. It talked about how children will model more of what we teach by example, than what we say. It spoke of mom's attitude toward housework being passed to her children. I stopped and just sat there. I have been pondering this for some time after reading it. What is my attitude toward work?

As I have thought about this, I have come to realize that I am eager to get my work done quickly. It has always seemed that housework or other work was a burden, or a grueling job that I wanted to just quickly finish. I even set goals for myself to look forward to doing when my work was done. However, it seemed that I never took joy in the actual work. I just wanted to get it over with, finished, and enjoy the goals that I set. The more work that came at me, the more frustrated I was because it seemed so endless at times before I would get to enjoy the goal/reward. I had never really analyzed my attitude toward my work before; after all, I thought everyone hated to do "work".

However, this book posed the idea of enjoying the work. I had never heard of anyone enjoying the work at hand before. The author talked about singing and talking, and enjoying the work with the children. He said that if I enjoy it, then my children will learn to enjoy the work they need to do. This was radically different than I had ever heard or considered. Enjoy work? I thought it was a matter of getting the grueling, dreaded work done to enjoy the reward.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. I have dreaded washing dishes, mopping the floor, doing laundry - so my children also dread it. Sure, we all work hard to have play time. However, I can see that I have missed something here. I can see that there is value in enjoying the work together with the children, rather than dreading it.

After reading this section of the book, I wanted to change this. I am going to be praying that God helps me and the children not to just complete the work so we can be done, but to learn to enjoy it. Wow, that is radically different than my old attitude and thought!

Enjoy your work (?). Yep, that is my desire. There are many other sections of this book that I find interesting as well, such as: Blessings- the Key to Obedience, Garden Rules for Raising Children, Bondage of Foolishness, A Quiet Ordered Life, Youth: Anointed Disciples of Jesus Christ, Father, the Watchman, and much more. If you want a book that challenges wordly thinking, then this is it. I am reading it for a second time because it is so rich with wisdom. I like the challenge to come up to a higher level in my walk with Christ.

If you can order the cd set of this book, in addition to the book, you will be blessed. (They are even free!) You will find the cds to be slightly different from the book,  and exhilarating to listen to while you mop -or for your husband as he drives to work.  I love to send my husband off to his long commute with such godly words of encouragement. My husband thanks me often for giving him such great cds for his commute. He says that he loves the call to a higher standard. The cds are amazing!! So, if you can, order the cds as well as the book. God is sooo good to give us words of encouragement from those who have gone before us. Praise His name!!

I have found the Pineapple stories from IBL have also helped me with my attitude. They are only tweny six dollars for five or so cds of a missionary's stories. Listening to these helped me to learn to have a quiet spirit and heart in understanding God's sovereignty.
