Heather
I have a love for learning and a passion for teaching. For the last ten years I have taught in public, private, and home schools in some way or another. I currently write educational grants and conduct developmental screenings for children who may be at risk for school failure.
My mom claims that I hold the title for being the most mischievous child ever.  She is quick to qualify that it isn't that I was bad, just that I very creatively found new things that my mother never thought to tell me were wrong.  As an adult I shared with her some brain research (see my previous post) that finally shed some light on my childhood for her.

What she discovered is that one way or another children seek to make sense of the world around them.  She did not provide for me proper opportunities to explore my environment in healthy ways, so I found unhealthy ways.  Pouring A-1 sauce over the cat was my attempt to make new pathways in my brain.  I learned that not all things in bottles are shampoo, that cats do not like to be wet, and that cats have claws. All these facts are useful but could have been learned in ways that did not involve moping and bandages.

When we are frustrated with the negative behaviors, it is easy to label the child as difficult or disobedient.
As adults we need to take the time to recognize what the behavior is telling us.  Some questions to ask yourself are:
  • Is the child really being disobedient or am I just exasperated by a bad choice?
  • Am I actually mad because of a failure on my part?
  • What does the child need that I can provide so this won't happen again?
