Lady Roadkill
Wife to a wonderful, imperfect man. Momma of 3 boys and a little girl. Homeschooler, friend, child of God, work in progress in so many ways.
Yesterday I woke up feeling a little crampy. I had a midwife appointment in the morning and was considered a week overdue, but I didn't really think it was much more than being sore with my 4th child.

At my appointment, I was pretty much where I had been the week before, but she did a stretch and sweep and I headed home. During the drive I had several real contractions...not the Braxton Hicks I had been having for months. So I continued home and started timing them to see if they would become more frequent. (BTW, check out www.contractionmaster.com as a great tool for this) They seemed to stay at 6 minutes apart.

I asked Dh to take me to get groceries, figuring the walking would either make things pick up or stop it. I got to about 5 minutes between and started having bloody show each time I used the potty. We figured things HAD to be moving forward.

It was getting close to the kids' bedtime, so we decided to head down to the city and made a few calls. We dropped the kids at a friend's house, ready for bed.

Now, I had wanted a home birth. I had had 2 midwife attended, uneventful hospital births; and one that started as a home birth but wound up in hospital as a c-section because he was a complete face presentation. We are currently living in a travel trailer, and there was no way it was suitable for a home birth. I had hired a doula in case I went into labour when my truck driver Dh was on the road (and he almost was...he was due to go out last night, but because I was having contractions was able to post-pone!!) Anyway, the doula is a member of a group of doulas...one of which has a big home and amazingly, selflessly offered for me to have the birth at her house to avoid the hospital and all their protocol for VBACs. So although I still had to pack up and drive to the city, I birthed in a house without Dr. intervention!! woohoo My semi-homebirth smile

You have no idea the giving nature of this Christian, homeschooling mom!! She wasn't even *my* doula!! I paid Tammy...Heather let us come to her house!!! I had NEVER met her before Tammy introduced us!! AND she gave up her master suite with big corner tub. AND she provided beverages for all the attendants and myself. AND she stayed up all night providing support and help.  AND she cleaned up afterward and did my laundry!!!

OK, so now we were down in the city, at this house, and the contractions are still pretty lame, about 5-6 minutes apart. If I stayed still, they slowed down, if I moved they sped up...but not much. The MW arrived and wondered if it was just irritation from the S&S. She suggested bed to see if they slowed down. So at 10 pm dh and I had a nap. Every 6 minutes I would still have a contraction and they HURT lying down, so I dozed, sitting up, between them. By 11, I got up, and they picked up to every 3 minutes. They HURT!!

Now, my first 2 kids I had achy back labour...not intense pain. I had read all kinds of things about how if you just relaxed and found the right position, it wouldn't hurt. I have a fairly good pain tolerance. These contractions HURT!!! And I tried a million positions and couldn't find relief. At one point, I had Dh sitting on the bed holding my upper body up. I was sitting on the ball, leaning against him and the doula was holding my legs so I wouldn't have to try to balance. I was able to relax my whole body so I was dozing for the 2 minutes between contractions, but they still hurt! I went into the bath, it was somewhat better. The MW was called back in.

From 1 am to 6 am I laboured in active labour. Can I say again...it HURT!!! I couldn't believe how much and I really tried everything anyone could suggest, and some things no one thought of to relieve the pain. I was 6 cm and fully effaced at 1 am. I was 6 cm and SWOLLEN at 5 am. I kept wanting to bear down because it made the contractions not as bad. For the last hour, I was told not to push down, and things got really bad, trying to breath through these horribly painful contractions. Finally, at 6 am, when I was still swollen and not much further along, the MW told me I had 30 minutes in the tub before we needed to consider transport to the hosp due to failure to progress and my very obvious distress. The hope was just to get me a little something so that I could rest and let things stop swelling. I was OK with it as the pain was really wearing me down and I could feel myself beginning to get panicky at the idea of any more contractions.

6:30 and the MWs packed up their stuff, the ambulance was called, everyone was moving around. I was on the corner of the bed in the one position I could find that was the least painful...head on my forearms, butt in the air. They had me dressed and were trying to convince me to move downstairs to make it easier for transport. I told them to wait for the next contraction. I had a big one and just HAD to push. I fully expected to be yelled at, but the MW toke a look and sent everyone running-unpack all the stuff, the baby is coming NOW.

Once they gave me permission to push, things went just fine. Teylah was born at 6:54. The ambulance attendants arrived at 6:53 and got to see me deliver, yelling, in the same head-down, butt-up position. Apparently, the younger guy had the most priceless look on his face when he walked in the room tongue Wish someone had snapped a picture, but they were really busy.

My dd was 9 lbs, the biggest so far. If it hadn't been for the wonderful skill of the MWs I would have torn. As it is, I am only mildly sore down there. The muscles in my abdomen hurt from pushing and panting when trying not to push, but otherwise I feel fine. We left the doula's house at 10am and came home to sleep smile We got the boys back for supper and have spent a lazy evening enjoying watching the cat freak out every time the baby sneezes, LOL.

There is SO much more I could say!! About how amazing the team of people surrounding me was, about how AMAZING my Dh was, about the millions of other little details that made it such an incredible experience. But this is long enough. God REALLY blessed us and I am in tears just admiring my beautiful DAUGHTER (that is SO weird to type after 3 BOYS!! tongue ) I just pray that above everything else, God was glorified this morning.
