This year, Purim falls on March 10th - a Tuesday. That's not a good day for congregations to get together, so this year, our congregation is having a Purim Party after Sabbath service on March 7. The kids made puppets this past Sabbath, which will be used to tell the story of Esther at the party.
Traditionally, Purim is a time to dress up in costume, an activity which shows us how Esther's Jewishness was hidden from King Xerxes.. "for such a time as this". When we are hidden behind costumes, we're pretending to be hidden in plain sight.. so that God can use us when He calls us into action.
The Megilla - or the book of Esther - is traditionally read completely through, and each time the name of Esther is said, the crowd makes wolf whistle sounds, or OOH EEE sounds because of her beauty. When Mordecai's name is said, we cheer him as a hero of the story, and when the name of Haman is said, we BOOO in order to block out his name - as is instructed to do in the last part of the story of Esther.
Our family this year will be on a trip. That day, March 10th will be spent traveling in the van, so we plan on watching the movie One Night With The King during that day.
Another fun thing to do is to make a small cookie called Hamentashen - or Haman's Hats. It's acircle of cookie dough, with a dollop of jam - fig or date or apricot, and folded to forma triangle with the jam inside.
And of course, a Purim Party needs games. For ideas here are a few sites for kids Aish and Torah Tots
Editor's Note: There is a very good booklet available on celebrating the biblical feasts, for families, at: http://amhehome.org/products.htm
