Kathy
Hi, I am a mom of 2 bouncing happy kids, Connor will be 5 in May and Abi will be 3 in April. Parenting is tough, fun, rewarding, a new adventure everyday and I am grateful to God for giving me these 2 bouncing babies!

So grocery shopping for me can be quite hair raising. I take snacks, toys, discipline etc, and they still love to do it all. Which is great- just feels like my ability to concentrate flies out the window. So one day I was reading an article about teaching kids on taking responsibility with house stuff, and one example they gave was teaching your munchkins about helping with the grocery shopping. They mentioned giving your kids grocery lists and money to pay with etc. So I decided to give it a try when we went. Now my two are 4 and 2 years old, so reading the lists and using my credit card was out of the picture, so I tried to improvise. I took items from my grocery list and wrote them in big letters on their list, and drew (not an artist at all) a picture of the item for them. They each got a marker, their lists and off we went. I shop at Costco and Trader Joes (LOVE Trader Joes), and Traders have kid sized shopping carts. So each got a shopping cart, list, juice cup and colored marker and away we went The kids had a blast, they stayed in tow, remembered their items (enjoyed traders free tasting items and wonderful gracious service), and it went well. I think they learnt something too (i hope). I thought I would share. I don't do the whole individual list thing each time- sometimes if it is a quick shop they get to remember an item or 2 each, and enjoy it. My nerves are better (ha ha) and they enjoy going to the grocery stores too!

That is such a great idea, I will be trying that with my 2 1/2 year old son next time I do a big shop. I must say he is usually well behaved, he only acts out when he is in need of his afternoon nap. Another quick fix is to give you toddler a wet wipe, while they sit in the trolley they can wipe themselves and the trolley clean, this used to keep my youngsters happy for about 20 minutes...
