We have now had our children on supplements for two full years and I can honestly say we are experiencing what it is like to be normal. We were approaching it before but the supplements tipped us over the edge.  I first wrote this article only three months after starting supplementation and have updated it.

For those of you who are confused, let me explain...

At the home school conference in 2009, we attended a series of classes by a lady named Dianne Craft. She was hilarious, intelligent, and knowledgeable, all wrapped up in one person. Her seminars were about teaching learning challenged and behaviorally challenged kids and I hung on her every word. We've been using her techniques for teaching Rose since we came home from the convention and I am slowly seeing progress.

Anyway, we decided to take her advice and put the kids on several supplements to help lower their anxiety levels. (While we were at the conference, Gabriel was so stressed out that he threw yogurt at the babysitter and pitched tantrums at every turn. It turned out that he was sick and we didn't know it, but even at that, he was pretty out of control and we were really downhearted that after one night of our being absent he could have this much anxiety.) So, after doing some research, sometime in mid-May, we put them on the supplements Dianne had suggested. (Note:  We used some of the brands Dianne had suggested at first but found over the counter brands were not as effective.  Soon after I wrote this original article, we switched to using all Shaklee and saw an even bigger difference in the kids.)

I'll give you the list, just in case you have an anxiety-ridden child out there. She says you have to do it for 3 months to really know if it is working.

Probiotic (Optiflora)
Magnesium/Calcium (Osteomatrix)
Essential Fatty Acids (OmegaGuard)
B-Complex

There are other things we have found to be helpful as well, such as Lecithin for our daughter who struggles with Sensory Integration Disorder and Alfalfa Complex, which has eliminated allergies and mild asthma.  We found, however, that the above list is the simplest to integrate and it seems the longer she is on this regimen, the fewer issues we have with SI.  We also have them on Shaklee's multi-vitamin, which helps keep their immune system built up to avoid illness, which causes major behavior problems.

We also used to use Calms Forte, which is an over the counter herbal supplement, as a sleep aid for Gabriel. (You can only purchase this at Walgreens, CVS, etc...they no longer carry it at Walmart and Meijer.)  He used to have extreme anxiety at night and this sleep aid calmed him without making him groggy in the morning.  We have switched to a Shaklee supplement called Gentle Sleep that is cheaper and works just as well on the rare occasion that he needs it but Gabriel's sleep issues are a thing of the past since I first published this article.

I should also say that probiotics are key, especially in the beginning.  Because of yeast overgrowth, most kids will need a double dose for a couple of months.  Honestly, we have had other physical issues that the pediatrician was unable to conquer that we have solved with supplementation as well.  These things were all contributing to bad behavior because our children were not feeling well.  I can't say enough about finding a good supplement source for your family.  Do your research though--I found only about 5 companies I would trust and none of them are over the counter.

To learn more about what we use for supplementation and why, based on the research I have done in the last few years, you can visit my supplementation website for more in depth information.
