Denise Marotta Lopes
Denise Marotta Lopes is a daughter of the King, a woman who is loved by her heavenly Father. It is her joy to be a wife, and mother of two grown children, and to serve those whom God brings into her life. It is her heart's desire to see people so consumed by the love of God that they pour out onto others, and are set free to walk out their destinies. She has written a book titled "Who's Sitting on Your Nest? The Virtues of Stay-at-Home Motherhood". It focuses on the joys of stay-at-home motherhood, and the benefits of a life invested in this ministry. The book was written to affirm those who have chosen to mother full-time and to encourage those who may be considering the call to do so. It takes the reader through the decison-making process, the value of motherhood, and the practical aspects of carrying out the mission. Denise is an avid lover of Jesus, dedicated intercessor, author, teacher, and speaker.
THE JOY OF READ-ALOUDS
by Denise Marotta Lopes

There's nothing like the feel of your child on your lap...the smell of his freshly-washed hair...and the joy of reading a good-night story.

I recall the day that my daughter no longer wanted to be read to because she had mastered reading on her own.  I smile when I think of her reading to our puppies!  My son, on the other hand, enjoyed read-alouds right up until he graduated from our home-school.

The advantages of reading to our children are numerous.  While young, they are exposed to the rhythm of language, gaining love and desire for the written word.  I remember not being able to read, looking at the pictures and yet unable to piece together the puzzle of words.  I would long for the time when my mom would read to me.

As children gain the ability to decipher language in the written form, they may still be limited by the difficulty level of the writing.  By being read to, they are exposed to a higher degree of language and meaning than they would be able to gain on their own.  I am a believer in reading the classics as they were written, and not in their watered-down form.  It is amazing how much can be absorbed by this exposure.  You will see it reflected in their speech and grammar, as well.  (This method is especially useful for auditory learners)

You are never too old to be read to.  I recall having a professor in graduate school who read a picture book to the class.  We were enthralled!  Likewise, my husband and I were visiting a dear friend who wanted to share an article with us.  Instead of making a copy of it, she read it to us!  It was delightful.  I have another friend who reads to her husband as he drives on long trips.  There is just something very soothing about the sound of another's voice as they convey the written word through speech.  It is a personal investment in the listener.

While all these advantages to reading aloud are important, there is none more valuable than the bonding which occurs during these times.  Everything slows down and your child is in a safe, quiet place, with the undivided attention of a mother who loves him.  Enjoy these moments.
