I have been pondering a habit that my husband has for all our married
life and then some. Whenever my husband sees something that isn't good for
his eyes, he turns his head away. He does it without thinking. He can't even
tell me what he was turning his head away from, because he said he does it
without thinking, ever since he was twelve.
He said that when he was a young
boy the Scripture about making a covenant with your eyes to not look at
anything sinful convicted him. He said he didn't want to be exposed to
anything that could cause him to stumble as a very young man, so he made a pledge with his eyes that he wouldn't look at anything that
he shouldn't see, like women without much clothing walking down the
street, or a bad commercial, etc.
It is funny that when we first were
dating, I tested him on this. I told God that if he, my husband, was
the one I was to marry, that he would have to pass a test of not looking
at other women (there is a long story for why I requested this). So, when he
went into the bathroom, I pulled out my roommate's Cosmopolitan magazine
and set this half-naked lady on the table in front of me. He came out
of the bathroom and said, "I rebuke you Satan" and then flipped the
magazine, without looking at it, over! And since I have known him, for fifteen years, he has always
done that.
I am trying to teach my girls and boys to
do this at a young age. Perhaps, it will be a habit that will really
help during the later years.
I have really grown to respect
this habit of his. I have been praying that God will help me to turn my
head like flint against anything that is sinful. I am really finding
this harder to do than I realized. Try doing that in Blockbusters
(ha,ha). You don't realize how much stuff you shouldn't look at until
you turn your head to avoid it. There are bad videos in stores, bad
magazines, awful billboards, etc. However, I really have found that I
am getting fond of it. It really helps to not entertain sinful or negative
thoughts, like even looking at those casino billboards or alcohol
billboards.
